Colon cleansing is a treatment for removing feces and toxins from the colon and intestines. There has been no scientific proof that the treatment does any good. The bowel cleans itself with out any help from us. Some treatments used to clean the colon have actually caused damage. Sometimes the process can cause dehydration and salt depletion in the body. Long term colon cleansing treatments can cause anemia, malnutrition and heart failure.
Colon cleansing started with the Greeks and Egyptians but was discredited in the early twentieth century. The easiest way to cleanse the colon if you feel that you need to do this for your health is to drink lots of water, green and black tea. This method helps flush mucas, old feces and partially digested food out of your body.
The next method is to do an enema or colon hydrotherapy. This method uses herbs and water injected into the colon. There are three types: cold, warm and hot. They should be done once a week. It would be best to get the treatment done at a health clinic that specializes in these treatments as they are done with special equipment. Several people should avoid getting enemas. These include: pregnant women, people getting over illnesses, people suffering from intestional obstructions and people suffering from piles and rectum ulcers.
